It’s Food Allergy Week 21st to 27th May 2023
Food Allergy Week aims to raise awareness of food allergy in Australia. Awareness and education helps to reduce the risk of allergic reactions and effective treat potential life-threatening emergencies when they happen.
Food Allergy Week 2023 calls on all Australians with both food allergy and asthma to remember to use your adrenaline injector first, asthma reliever puffer second if you experience sudden breathing difficulty – it is a lifesaving order. Always follow instructions on your ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis.
Be Aware
Australia has one of the highest incidences of food allergy in the world and this is increasing at an alarming rate; in fact, the country has seen a 7% year on year increase in food allergy fatalities over the last 15 years, and 1 in every 10 babies born in Australia will develop a food allergy.
With no known cure for food allergy, awareness and education are most important, as an allergic reaction can quickly become life threatening. A severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) must be treated as a medical emergency.
It’s important for Australians to be aware of food allergies, know the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction and know how to respond in an emergency. A great way to help raise awareness is to show you care by getting involved in Food Allergy Week.
