Overview/Content

This CPCWHS1001 White Card Course provides the essential knowledge and practical skills required to work safely in the construction industry across Victoria. Commonly referred to as the White Card Training or Construction Induction Course, this nationally recognised unit is mandatory for anyone entering a construction site.

Topics covered include:

  • Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) laws, duties and responsibilities
  • Identifying construction site hazards and applying risk control measures
  • Safe work practices and safe systems of work
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements
  • Emergency procedures and incident reporting
  • Workplace communication and safety signage
  • Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) and basic risk assessment processes

By the end of this White Card Construction Safety Course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand their rights and responsibilities under WHS legislation
  • Identify common construction site hazards and associated risks
  • Apply basic risk control and hazard management measures
  • Follow safe work procedures and site safety rules
  • Recognise emergency procedures and reporting requirements
  • Demonstrate safe behaviour and awareness on construction sites

There are no formal education prerequisites for enrolment in this course.

However, participants must:

  • Be 18 years of age or over
  • Possess basic Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills to complete written assessments
  • Provide valid photo identification on the day of training
  • Upon successful completion, participants will receive a:

    Statement of Attainment for CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry

    White Card, issued by the relevant state regulator (in VIC, by WorkSafe Victoria) following successful completion.

  • The White Card is nationally recognised, valid for use across Australia.
  • In many jurisdictions (e.g., NSW), it becomes void if no construction work is undertaken for two consecutive years.
  • Face-to-face classroom delivery only in Victoria. Online or remote delivery is not accepted by WorkSafe Victoria; 
  • Face-to-face training will result in a valid White Card.
  • Duration: Minimum of 7 hours of training.
  • All participants must attend in person, with valid photographic ID–requirements strictly monitored by the RTO and WorkSafe. 
  • White Cards are issued by WorkSafe (or equivalent regulator in each state). In VIC, providers must apply on behalf of the student, and the card is typically mailed within up to 60 days.
  • Some providers may include Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessments to ensure participants can meet course requirements. 
  • Additional site-specific induction training may still be required by individual construction employers beyond the national White Card course.
