Don’t Let These CPR Myths Stop You From Saving a Life

October is Shocktober — a month dedicated to raising awareness about cardiac arrest, CPR, and defibrillation. When it comes to emergency situations, every second counts. Yet, one of the most powerful life-saving actions—Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)—is often avoided due to fear, misinformation, and outdated beliefs.

This Shocktober, let’s set the record straight by busting five of the most common CPR myths that might be holding you or your loved ones back from taking action.

Whether you’re a trained first aider or someone who wants to be prepared, it’s time to separate fact from fiction and gain the confidence to step in when it matters most.

Myth 1: You Need to Be a Medical Professional to Perform CPR

Fact: You don’t need to be a doctor, nurse, or paramedic to perform CPR. Everyday Australians can, and do, save lives every year.

The Australian Resuscitation Council confirms that trained bystanders significantly improve survival outcomes in cardiac arrest scenarios. Even a basic CPR course like HLTAID009 gives you the confidence and skills to respond effectively in an emergency.

Truth: If someone isn’t breathing and/or not showing signs of a pulse, any CPR is better than none.

Myth 2: You Might Hurt Someone More by Doing CPR

Fact: Broken ribs and other chest injuries are quite common during CPR — but that’s still no reason to hesitate.

What matters most is restoring blood flow to the brain and heart. A broken rib is painful but usually survivable; cardiac arrest without CPR almost always leads to death within minutes. Current training, including that in HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, addresses this concern with safe techniques proven to give the best chance of survival.

Truth: CPR injuries, like rib fractures, are common but usually survivable. Cardiac arrest without CPR is not.

Myth 3: Mouth-to-Mouth Resuscitation is Always Necessary

Fact: Not anymore. For adult cardiac arrest, hands-only CPR is often sufficient.

The international guidelines now recommend compression-only CPR for adult victims when rescue breaths aren’t possible or practical. This means fewer barriers to helping—no need to worry about mouth-to-mouth if you’re uncomfortable or unsure.

Truth: Chest compressions alone can double or triple survival rates when given immediately.

Myth 4: You Could Get Sued for Doing CPR Wrong

Fact: In Australia, the law protects Good Samaritans.

All states and territories have laws in place that protect people who act in good faith to provide first aid. If you attempt CPR with honest intent, you are unlikely to face legal action. Knowing this can ease the fear of stepping in during emergencies.

Truth: The law is on your side when you’re trying to help.

Myth 5: CPR is Only for Adults

Fact: CPR can and should be performed on children and even infants—with a few adjustments.

A common hesitation comes from fear of doing it “wrong” on a child. But inaction can be more dangerous. CPR training such as HLTAID010 – Provide Basic Emergency Life Support teaches age-appropriate modifications, like using two fingers instead of two hands for babies.

Truth: Learning child-specific CPR empowers you to act without fear, no matter the age of the casualty.
