October is once again National Safe Work Month across Australia—a dedicated time to reaffirm our commitment to safer, healthier workplaces. In 2025, there are some fresh elements, new weekly focuses, and expanded ways for everyone to join in. Here’s what’s new this year, why it matters, and how you (or your workplace) can take part.

What’s New in 2025

  • Theme: Safety: Every Job, Every Day
Safe Work Australia has introduced a compelling theme—Safety: Every Job, Every Day. The idea is that safety isn’t just for high-risk jobs or occasional events: every task, role, and workplace needs attention daily.
  • A Clear Weekly Focus for October
The campaign will break the month down into four weekly themes, meant to guide activities and discussions:
Week Dates (approx.) Focus Area
Week 1 1-6 October Identify Hazards
Week 2 7-13 October Assess Risks
Week 3 14-20 October Control Risks
Week 4 21-31 October Review Controls & Musculoskeletal Injuries Safe Work Australia+1

This structure helps workplaces systematically walk through the risk management process

  • More & Better Resources
Safe Work Australia and various state regulators are producing practical, shareable tools: editable templates, posters, SafeTea event kits, podcasts, checklists — many available in multiple languages for greater inclusion.
  • Inclusion: making sure culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) workers are considered, with translated materials and accessible formats.
  • Musculoskeletal injury prevention, given ongoing high rates of those kinds of injuries

Why This Matters

  • Recent data shows that in 2023, around 200 workers died on the job in Australia, and there were about 139,000 serious injury or illness workers’ compensation claims
  • Although outcomes have improved over years, the sheer human cost behind each number is a strong reminder that even one preventable workplace injury or death is too many.
  • Many WHS (Work Health & Safety) laws require ongoing risk management, consultation, and review—not just tick-box safety. This campaign reinforces legal and ethical duties.

How to Get Involved: For Different Players

Whether you’re an employer, worker, union representative, or industry group, there are many simple, high-impact ways to contribute during National Safe Work Month.

For Employers and Businesses

Kick off October by hosting a SafeTea event or toolbox talk that aligns with the weekly theme. Display campaign posters, share resources in team chats, and refresh your risk assessments. Facilitate mental health check-ins and invite employees to share feedback about psychosocial hazards. If your workplace involves physical tasks, take time to review controls for musculoskeletal injuries and make sure daily tasks are as safe as possible.

For Workers and Health & Safety Representatives (HSRs)

Step forward as safety champions by suggesting or leading sessions to identify hazards and assess risks with your team. Make sure everyone’s voice is heard in consultations, track whether risk controls are working, and remind your workplace to review them regularly. As an HSR, you can also help promote inclusion by ensuring communication is accessible to all workers.

For Industry Bodies, Unions, and Regulators

Share campaign materials with your members and tailor them to the unique needs of your sector. Host webinars, workshops, or panel discussions that dive into emerging WHS topics such as psychosocial risk management, inclusion, or musculoskeletal health. Consider organising a “safety innovation” competition to spotlight good practice across your industry. And don’t forget to help spread awareness online by using hashtags like #SafeWorkMonth and #SafetyIsOurBusiness.

Practical Steps to Plan for October

  • Start early: Review your policies, control measures, and risk assessments now so you’re ready to action in Week 1.
  • Set goals: e.g. reduce musculoskeletal injuries by X%; include CALD workers in safety induction; perform safety audits.
  • Use existing resource hubs: Safe Work Australia’s “Resource Hub” is full of editable tools; you can customise posters and communication pieces.
  • Communicate broadly: Internal newsletters, team meetings, virtual workshops; ensure messages reach remote, casual, contract, and vulnerable workers.
  • Review & follow up: After each week, evaluate what worked, what didn’t, and prepare for the next week’s topic. At month-end, summarise outcomes and plan continuous action.

Key Themes by Week: What to Focus On

  • Week 1 – Identify Hazards: Encourage everyone to spot hazards—not just physical but also psychosocial.
  • Week 2 – Assess Risks: Evaluate likelihood & severity; get worker input.
  • Week 3 – Control Risks: Implement engineering, administrative controls; PPE; safe systems of work.
  • Week 4 – Review Controls & Musculoskeletal Injuries: See whether controls are effective; focus on tasks likely to cause manual handling strain or repetitive injury.

Final Thoughts

National Safe Work Month 2025 is more than an annual reminder—it’s an opportunity to build lasting change. With its theme of “Safety: Every Job, Every Day”, new weekly focuses, and emphasis on inclusion and mental health, it challenges all of us to elevate workplace safety as a daily practice. Whether small or large, every action counts: reviewing risk, listening to workers, improving controls, and ensuring safety for ALL roles—everyone.
