Under Victorian workplace health and safety laws, employers have a duty of care to provide a safe environment — including having trained staff ready to respond to emergencies. Winter conditions bring unique risks, and being prepared isn’t just best practice — it’s a legal and moral responsibility for every workplace.

Winter in Victoria is in full swing — bringing frosty mornings, rainy afternoons, and an increased risk of certain accidents. Many winter-related injuries can be managed in the crucial first minutes with the right first aid skills and a well-stocked kit.

To help workplaces prepare, we’re offering 20% off onsite workplace First Aid training until the end of August.

Mention voucher code “WINTER20” with your enquiry (onsite training only).

1. Slips, Trips & Falls (Minor Cuts, Bruises, and Bleeding)

Wet footpaths, icy patches, and indoor spills make winter prime time for slips and trips. While serious falls require medical attention, knowing how to stop bleeding, clean a wound, and apply a dressing can prevent infection and aid recovery. The Better Health Channel recommends keeping walkways clear and using non-slip footwear to reduce risks.

2. Burns & Scalds from Heaters, Fireplaces & Hot Drinks

Hot drinks, open fireplaces, and portable heaters bring comfort in winter — but they also increase burn risks. First aid for burns involves cooling the burn under running water for 20 minutes and keeping the area clean. As Healthdirect Australia notes, never use ice, creams, or oils, as these can make the injury worse.

3. Hypothermia

Cold, wet weather can quickly lower body temperature, especially for outdoor workers, hikers, or children. First aid for hypothermia focuses on warming the person gradually, removing wet clothing, and using blankets or body heat while monitoring breathing. The Better Health Channel warns that early intervention is crucial to prevent severe complications.

4. Asthma Attacks Triggered by Cold Air

Cold air can tighten airways and trigger asthma symptoms. First aid training covers how to help someone use their reliever inhaler, encourage controlled breathing, and call for help if symptoms worsen. According to Asthma Australia, winter is a high-risk period for asthma flare-ups.

5. Choking from Winter Comfort Foods

Hearty meals, warm bread rolls, and rich desserts are comforting — but can be choking hazards, especially for young children and older adults. Healthdirect Australia provides clear steps on how to clear an airway safely, which you’ll also learn in a first aid course.

6. Nosebleeds from Dry Indoor Air

Heaters can dry out the air, making nosebleeds more common in winter. The Better Health Channel recommends leaning forward, pinching the nose firmly, and avoiding lying back to prevent blood from flowing down the throat.
